The other parties involved are other internet providers such as AT&T and Clearwire. Clearwire and AT&T would love to have me as a customer and probably would be willing to give me a great deal to switch from Comcast. I searched their websites and even read a mailer from Clearwire that came to our home. Without negotiation, their advertised rates were half of what I pay Comcast now. I maneuvered my way through the phone prompts and eventually reached a customer service representative. Takkia was the representative who answered my call and little did she know that this would be my first attempt at negotiating for something new, and of course this was information that I was not going to disclose to her. I was ready and prepared to negotiate for a lower internet monthly fee.
I asked Takkia if they had any specials but the only specials they had were for new customers. I asked her what could be done to lower my monthly internet rate. She checked the system and said it appeared that I had the best deal possible. So it was time to reach in my back pocket for my BATNA. I asked if she could match the deal of a competitor and she stated that she could not. I explained that I wanted a lower monthly rate for my internet service and asked if she could lower my cost based on the fact that I have considered switching to another company to pay less each month. Takkia put me on hold and shortly came back to offer me a lower rate for three months. While this was progress, I wanted a lower rate for longer. With my rule of “just ask”, I troubled her to find out if they could over me a rate for longer than three months. After a short time on hold, she said they would extend me the lower rate for six months. I had just cut my monthly internet rate in half for six months! I was excited that my first
