In middle school my school went on trips every year, the sixth graders went to Greece, seventh to Italy, and eighth to Thailand. The eighth-grade trip tries to focus on service more than the others. My coming of age moment wasn't seeing the poor, hungry Thai because I've seen miserable people before. It wasn't traveling without my parents because I did that too. It was my friends while we were working the fields they were speaking of the latest drama, and I worked my butt off for the old lady. I was motivated to get the Job done, and they wanted to quit. My coming of age moment happened now.
While my friends were sitting in the shade, I was sweating and hoeing the dirt, and I told them to get up and get to work. I realized that lots of people in the real world talk talk talk but never do. I realized that those I was friends with really didn;t care about other people and just about themselves. There I realized that if I wanted something done right, I'd have to do it myself. I had to leave behind the childish notions that people would listen to me and respect me even when I knew I was right
This moment was a coming of age for me not because I saw the less fortunate people but because I saw that when it came to doing real manual labor to help they didn't do it. I also learned to use my different leadership skills that people wouldn't listen to you if you only yell at them but give them a reason why to do it. Lead by
