“Culture is the interference of people and life itself. Its how we deal with life, love, death, birth, disappointment… All of that is expressed in culture.” Wendell Pierce Growing up in a country that has a different culture than your own is very difficult. Trust me, I would know. Recently, it has been easier to “function” in this country without confusing my culture with those of others. Living in America, we have the privilege of coming in contact with many different cultures. Here, there are people from South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. People from all around the world have come to America for multiple reasons.

It is like our world, as are many different countries that all speak different languages and the same goes for the book. Celena speaks three different languages. She speaks Fae, Ardalan, and Eyllwe. She is a Fae, which is a creature of magic from a different world, so she obviously knows the Fae language. Although, she doesn't have anyone to talk to in Fae because all magic has been forbidden by the king throughout his entire kingdom. Music is in every culture. In the book, Celena loves music. For example, when a singer is invited into the palace Celena says this “I like music," she said slowly, "because when I hear it, I . . . I lose myself within myself, if that makes any sense. I become empty and full all at once, and I can feel the whole earth roiling around me. When I play. I'm not . . . for once, I'm not destroying, I'm creating.” (237). I assume that their music is not very different than the American version of music. Mexican music however is very different. There is one style of music that is spread throughout Mexico and the majority of people love it. Its called Banda. Banda is so unique compared to pop music. If you were to see a Banda band, you would assume that they look like an actual band; that uses trumpets, tubas, and percussion however this band also includes guitars. The instruments that Celena would name off were exotic and so foreign. Although all of this is true, the more I think about Clena’s culture, the more I find that my culture is similar. Music is very popular and important in both of our cultures. In any country
