Body
A. Main Point 1: The Virgin of Guadalupe also known as the Virgen de Guadalupe is a national symbol to the Catholic culture because after this story it demonstrates how the catholic faith gained importance.
1. Sub-point 1: It is stated that on the morning of December 9, 1531, a Native American peasant by the name of Juan Diego saw a vision of a maiden at a place called the Hill of Tepeyac, which is now home to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, she told him that a church should be built at that site in her honor. He recognized the voice of the woman as the Virgin Mary. So he went out to look for someone, he left to find the archbishop and told him what he had seen but they didn’t believe him, he asked him to go back to a retrieve a sign to prove her identity. The Virgin Mary told him to gather flowers from the top of the hill, she arranged them in his cloak and back he went to the archbishop. When Juan Diego opened his cloak before the archbishop on December 12, the flowers fell to the floor and on the fabric of his cloak was the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe or La Virgen de Guadalupe. This demonstrates how the catholic faith gained the importance in their heart for the Mexican people. This changed the history of Mexico with faith and the works of miracles.
2. Sub-point 2: The virgin of Guadalupe has parts to her that people may not know what they mean and that’s I’m about to explain. For instance why she stands on the crescent moon and why she is being carried by an angel. La Virgen de Guadalupe is standing on the crescent of the moon to show the Aztecs that she’s greater than their moon god. The angel that is below our lady signifies that she is above the angels being the Mother of god. The clouds around the image meant something divine or the elevation of the spirt. Clouds also marked the beginning of a new era. She is someone that after being revealed by Juan Diego became a huge image to the culture and someone they look up to. This image was easily understood by the natives that a huge number of people where baptized into the catholic faith.
