Commedia Del Arte was the birth of new beginnings in the theatre world. It was the beginning of improv, the advent of actresses, and most importantly the idea of “Stock Characters.” Stock characters were and still are described as “…specific stereotypes that people from the audience truly can understand and connect to that connects to literary traditions.” (Swain) From that time on there has been an increase of stock characters in the shows following that time. As growing farther away from that era there has been an update from the original specific stock characters such as, Dottore, Harlequinn, Pantalone, Capitano, to the Jock, the nerd, A hero, a villain, the dumb blonde. Cladwell reins the bathroom usage over the population due to a water shortage. There isn’t much going on in Hope’s head since she doesn’t see what her father is doing and unintentionally helps the hero, Bobby Strong overthrow her father as well. She makes dimwitted comments such as “Gosh Daddy, I never realized large, monopolizing corporations could be such a force for good in the world!” Although the “dumb blonde” is seemed to not help move the plot along rather gives no need for the character, she is the one to make the first steps of a conflict in the musical by telling Bobby Strong to follow his heart, which in affect leads a riot to overthrow Cladwell. The “lovers” are described as, “The main characters who deeply and truly fall romantically in love, despite the blocking effect of other characters; often moonstruck, star-crossed lovers that are strongly fraternizing with the enemy.”(Kohlke) Bobby and Hope are almost like Romeo and Juliet in the sense that they may fall in love with each other, but are from rival teams, Bobby who is part of the rebellion, and Hope who is the daughter of the main villain. This adds another aspect on the plot to help move it along by creating a conflict that needs to be solved. It brings more depth into the character’s lives and helps shape it as well, helping the audience compare to the characters and understand what they are going
