Communication Opinion Paper
Effective communication is essential to the success of healthcare profession. Good communication skills are critical in all sectors of healthcare field because the quality of care and life of patients depend on it (Bauer, n.d.). Effective communication become a lifeline and can impact the care of the patient. If a member of the medical team of doctors or nurses does not understand each other and the directions for the specific procedures and instructions are misinterpreted, the outcome could be disastrous. Being able to communicate effectively, especially in health care profession give better understanding of the person and the situation.
Effective communication incorporates the essential elements of communication by creating a successful professional and personal relationship between healthcare workers and patients in health care environment. Communication is the process of sending and receiving a message and can be different for a different kind of people (Cheesebro, O’Connor, & Rios, 2010). To a student, communication can be interpreted as learning new skills. While to an employee it might mean getting the job done. The first skills that are use for effective communication is listening. Listening is the understanding of words or information that is being communicated by the speaker and receiver (Cheesebro, O'Connor et al., 2010). It is important that both party, which is the speaker and receiver, has a clear understanding of what is being communicated. The second essential element of communication that incorporate into an effective communication is the non-verbal communication (Cheesebro, O'Connor et al., 2010). Body movement and gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, tone of voice and even breathing and muscle tension can translate into a non-verbal communication. Non-verbal communication is as much important as spoken language in the health care profession. A patient can inrepret the pain that he feels through body language. Healthcare profession is a stressful field, and it is important to understand each other and communicate effectively.
Essential elements of effective communication differ from the basic rules of healthcare communications in particular ways (Cheesebro, O'Connor et al., 2010). . In the medical profession, specific things should be avoided in order to achieve effective communication. It is important to avoid confusing terminology and not to use verbiage with people who do not understand the terms. Health care profession has a vast terminology that can be confusing. It is also important to communicate in such a way that everybody understands the idea and information that is being conveyed. Avoid losing temper when talking to a patient and not to interrupt when someone is talking to prevent misinterpretation of information. As part of the health care team, it is crucial not to lose temper in a difficult situation and conversations. In addition, make sure to use simple and clear speech to can cause confusion and be open minded to feedback.
In some situation, it can be difficult for a provider to encourage a reluctant patient to communicate candidly. Medical providers can use some methods in order for the patient to talk. Make sure to ask the right questions and listen. Patients can sense if you are genuinely concern in their situation. Pay attention
