Communism In John Steinbeck's The Grapes Of Wrath

Steinbeck shows us many times in The Grapes of Wrath that he supports the idea of communism. First of all, capitalism is when businesses are run private owners rather than by the state. Capitalism was shown in a negative light in Grapes of Wrath when almost all of the privately owned farms turned their backs on the Okies and either didn’t let them in or paid them so little they could barely survive. On the other hand, communism was shown through Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath to be a wonderful solution to The Great Depression and it would most help the people who were barely surviving. This is shown through the government-owned communities like the one the Joads. Each family supported itself in that community, and they all were able to get along with section leaders they could take their problems to. These things among others really helped to show Steinbeck’s feelings toward communism, that it could really help a country heal and change for the better.
If I had owned a big California farm at the time of the Great Depression I feel like I would be disgusted with the Okies. I would feel like they are taking good jobs for all of the Californians who need jobs as well. I

The Joad family were the main characters and I think their determination and grit played a huge role in the shaping of the claim. I believe the claim was that no matter what tragedy strikes or what happens around you, with a strong and supporting group of people around you, you can survive anything. This is very evident with the Joads, due to the fact that no matter where they go or what awful things they go through- like losing family members or being forced to leave their homes- as long as they have each other they can live through it to a better
