Section 2 Creating the Community Performance piece
INTRO
This is a brief introduction – do not write too much here, save it for the main body of your essay.
Aim of performance (Didactic Theatre?) The style and intention of the community piece (Brechtian? Naturalistic or Non-naturalistic? Artaud? Stanislavsky?) The performance venue – community aspect
LINK same process as other pieces brainstorming/discussing ideas – devise, rehearse, perform
Wove in local stories – local historical figures/historical venues.
Style – aspect of style(s) used. What was the style/genre used?
What were the main aims? Which aspects of the style did you use? You must show the examiner that you understand style.
Performance issues arising from the content
Discuss the performance approaches that you decided to use. What you did and why? Don’t discuss what was rejected at length.
Research
How? What? Why?
DEVISING
Discuss process of creating the piece. Do not write a diary. Give about ten examples of sections that you worked on from the 3 art forms. Can include photos.
Dance Eclectic? Describe using vocabulary – dramatic tension/ dynamics/relationships/actions/levels/motif/unison/characterisation discuss staging. If using ballet put in terminology. Did any choreographer influence?
Drama Use of BRECHT or other practitioners eg Godber. Episodic structure/ Characterisation/stereotypical./Audience didn’t become attached emotionally. Brechtian techniques. Use words – proxemics, dialogue, physicality, tension, characterisation. Didactic. Dramatic techniques – placards, multiple roles, breaking the fourth wall, anti-catharsis, stereotypical characters.
Music Discuss compositions - Describe the structure – harmonies, melodies, thin/thick texture, tempo – slow/fast, pulse and rhythm. Instruments - piano, xylophone, drums, keyboard, guitars, sticks? Vocals? Practitioners? Use music terminology.
Structuring the piece
Honestly evaluate. Is each section of the right length? Is the piece balanced? Is the pace the same throughout? Is there anything that could have been changed?
