My supervisor is in the middle of freshman conferences. During the freshman conference the counselor, student, and parent, go over the student and parents goals for the current year and beyond, and if the student is involved in extra-curricular activities. Resources are given on what a school counselor is there to help them with, as well as, the role of the social worker, principal, and the student services office. In addition, the student and parent are giving a tour of the computer lab, and shown where they can find volunteer opportunities and scholarship information. Also discussed, is the importance of a student’s GPA, graduation requirements, and their 4-year academic plan. Information is given on career cruising, what it can help them with, and what colleges will be looking at if they attend to go to college. It was stressed to students, to take the timed pretests, to prepare them for the actual test. I was able to offer one-on-one assistance to students on this process. The counselors weren’t happy they had to be in a classroom all day, but it was a way to support many students all at once. The day went very well and the students were able to accomplish a great deal. Even though it takes the counselors out of the office all day, it was a way to connect with a significant number of students. The school held a senior applications day, whereas; students could go to four different areas; taking the accuplacer, complete and submit college applications, an essay workshop, and a parchment and FSA ID sign up, as well as scholarship information. I had the opportunity to help students set up their FSA ID and parchment transcript accounts, as well as, helping students work on their college applications. The process started out rather daunting because of an issue with the sites, but once a simpler approach was figured out, more students were assisted. Close to 200 students were given support on college applications
