Achilles benefits from the role as a hero because as a victorious warrior he has garnered the respect, praise, and admiration of his countrymen. Nonetheless, with all the accolades and reverence he receives he is still burdened by hypocrisy and treacherous behavior Agamemnon which stirs up in Achilles internal strife and conflict. Unlike Achilles, David was not already well known, but when David killed Goliath his bravery as a warrior brought him fame and respect. While they both fought to defeat enemies that sought to bring destruction to their homelands, they each had different motivations. Achilles fought to gain fame and fortune while David fought to show that the God of Israel will prevail over the gods of the Philistines. “All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” ("Bible Gateway Passage: 1 Samuel 17:47 - New International Version"). Finally, I would assert that both these men were aware of a divine assignment they were to complete, but in Achilles' case, the gods controlled the outcome of human lives, so for Achilles, there was no way to change his inevitable end. However, David chose to fight for a higher purpose and was guided by what could be considered more honorable
