These stories focuse on both these pore families living in poverty. Both families are fighting for a better life. In "Angelas ashes" the older daughter is the only one who is caring for the family getting the sibblings food and getting the mom alcohol. In "the street" its the mother trying to find a room for her homeless children in a wind storm. Both these stories are magnificent but also terrifing in the eyes of the children.

In the story Angelas ashes the mother is a terrible, hating drunk that doesn't love her children one bit. She sends her eldest child to rob the pup to get her liquor. It is very sad that the mother puts her child on the streets to rob and steal for her needs. She is the one who provides for her 3 brothers and her helpless mother. Forced to steal alcohol from the liquor store and rob neighbors and stores to provide food for her family. For example, " Mam mumbles again for lemonade and I give her half the second bottle to keep her quiet." This quote was said by the eldest child of the family," after she just robbed a liquor store for her drunken mom. "She calls for more and I mix it with water to stretch it because I can't be spending my life running around lifting lemonade from pubs." This mother is fighting for a way out of the storm, with no place to go, she knows she can't give up.The mother, finding anything possible to hide in or under finds a sign with a few rooms to find cover in. A quote from the mother really reached out to me, "She read it rapidly. Three rooms, steam heat, parquet floors, respectable tenants. Reasonable." At the end of this quote it says, "reasonable", which means she is willing to do anything to get her family out of the
