What is individualism? What is a community? Is individualism just being self reliant and being a independent human who doesn’t depend on anyone? is community just a group of people living in the same place or having similar characteristics ? throughout my readings of sociological text authored by King and Callero they address what exactly community and individualism. The way individualism and community functions in these texts it is necessary to look at the concepts, consequences and also information. In the first chapter callero touched on a concept of Individualism. He defines this concept as a belief system that privileges the individual over the group, private life over public life, and personal expression over social experience; it is a worldview where autonomy, independence, and self-reliance are highly valued and thought to be natural; and it is an ideology based on self-determination, where free actors are assumed to make choices that have direct consequences for their own unique destiny. Culture of individualism, American society- we use phrases like "you have no one to blame but yourself" and "think for yourself" we are raised to be independent individuals, as opposed to other cultures like Nigeria who recognize sharing and togetherness. Americans are taught to work hard for themselves. Callero goes on to talk about the way our economy works-capitalism makes us believe that it is our own responsibility to get employed. We believe in our own right and freedoms that we work hard for our own property. Our freedoms can be effected by the freedom of others. In chapter 2 callero goes on to talk about the social construction of person hood which pretty much is people with the most power and authority get to classify what is "human"- the term is up for grabs.
