A lot of horror fans, especially gothic horror poetry or book fans, all know that the ultimate horror icon faceoff is between Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King. If they were in a fight over who is more disturbed or creates more eerie work, Poe would win. I know that there is the "But Poe was a poet and Stephen is a full-lengthed-book author!" But, the fact that both of them are horror writers is enough for it to be a fair battle. Yeah Stephen is a great writer and he has written a lot of really great books but when we get right down to it, the fact that he usually writes horror books means that we are judging his more scary and famous works. What I look for in a good horror story is how disturbing it is. I can successfully say that I have never read one of Poe's work and not been left with a spine-tingling chill up and down my body. Edgar was mentally unstable and so I feel as though it has more of a real feel to it, as though it may in fact be real, no matter how many times at night when the thoughts of his work creep up into your thoughts and you try to reassure yourself that it isn't real but a little part of you feels as though it is because of how he writes, how he writes every thought, jamming it into one simple, eerie, stanza.
