Between the years 1890 and 1920, immigrant groups and farmers began to move to cities, causing massive population booms in these regions. However, with the population growing at an exponential rate, it became extremely difficult for cities to stay in tip top shape, allowing urban problems to spread. Many big families were forced to live in small, dirty, and crowded apartment buildings known as tenements. Public Transportation was highly demanded by the working class, but it was simply too expensive to create more and keep them in good shape. Most importantly, people were demanding that they receive fresh drinking water and sanitary living conditions, as diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever was spreading everywhere.
