Now imagine the pawns are people and you are the government controlling the people. This scenario perfectly depicts a dystopian society, where the government controls the citizens to believe in a utopia. Many books and movies use a dystopian storyline; some examples are: “2BR02B”, and “Harrison Bergeron” both by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., “We Ate the Children Last” by Yann Martel as well as the short film produced by Jonathan Hodgson, and Karen Harmisch). The authors and procedures of these stories show many of the same dystopian characteristics, but these characteristics aren’t much different from the real world; especially when it comes to government. In Martel’s story after a medical breakthrough was made “A revolution of the gut was sweeping through society”(Martel 2). But even though a massive amount of people praised this medical breakthrough, there was still controversy among those who thought this procedure was dehumanizing. Similarly, how during the COVID-19 pandemic a shot was found to help prevent COVID-19 although many did take this shot, there was also a massive amount of skeptical people which sparked a controversy. There are so many ways that we can connect these dystopian stories to our own lives. Having a controlling dystopian government is very similar to a dictatorship, they both turn their citizens into soldiers, being able to control their citizens. For instance, in one of Vonnegut’s dystopias, he made it so some citizens, “Every twenty seconds or so the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains” (Vonnegut 1).
