Comparing Freud's Civilization And Its Discontents '

Out of the various books, we read this semester, the two that I believe envisions a good society are Civilization And Its Discontents written by Freud and March by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell. These two books are mainly unlike, but both emphasize the complexities of humans and civilization by means of struggle; struggle to comprehend each other. In the novel, Civilization and Its Discontents, Freud gives many examples of how humans are naturally complex, such as our thought-process, development, interpretation, our civilization, beliefs, ego, etc. For example, Freud talks about how civilization is supposed to heal our suffering and make us overall happier, but instead, he explains how civilization is realistically responsible for a great amount of our pain and lack of originality. The question then becomes are we truly happy? Do we know what true happiness is? After reading this novel, it caused me to question some beliefs that I always thought was true. George S Patton once said, “if everyone is thinking alike the someone is not thinking” which is one of the reasons Signmed Freud was able to be as extremely successful because he questioned everything until he understood it. Therefore, if everyone took the time to become knowledgeable about how complicated we are, then we could create a better future for ourselves. We would not be so quick to believe in things we are simply told too. In addition, we would look at situations beyond the surface before making a
