London exposed himself to theories and ideas that would change his beliefs. One theory that drastically changed him was the theory of evolution and natural selection (Dyer, 271). With this theory, Mr. London’s writing took a new path, a path that was riddled with hints to his new belief. Jack London continuously showed examples of natural selection in both “The Call of the Wild” and “White Fang”. In “The Call of the Wild”, Buck is faced with the problem of a completely new environment, and in order to survive, he must adapt (Buckwalter, 66). Jack London observed that in the wild only the tough survived and natural selection enforced his observation. When he wrote “White Fang”, he followed the laws of the wild. Only the tough survive, and White Fang was tough (Buckwalter, 93). Mr. Darwin’s writing greatly influenced Jack London’s stories. Then, his stories inspire many people to take a chance with nature. The experiences that people have in nature can be life changing.
