Jeremiah, and Nicusor leave their mundane daily school lessons to pursue careers as actors, in an attempt to better the lives of their families and themselves. In 2015, Romanian culture emphasizes the importance of a good quality of life, and independence which emphasizes society being focused on feminine social norms. Female characters play a prominent role in the society of 2015 Romania, as evidenced by Nicusor and Jeremiah’s English teacher, and Mother Florida in the village. Careers are overlapped by both genders, women are seen in positions of authority, and men are seen doing work such as farming and tending crops.
Jeremiah’s mother pressures him to stay on top of his school work, and is the parent primarily involved with his nurturing as well as disciplining him. This is heavily contrasted in the 1835 film, Aferim in which: Female characters were treated as objects of sexual desire in Aferim!, a prostitute is featured in the film with several leading characters having little regard for her as anything other than a sexual object.
