Compare & Contrast The story, “Charles”, by Shirley Jackson, is about a boy named Laurie who starts kindergarten. He made up a troublemaker named Charles to trick his parents into thinking that he didn’t do anything wrong. He was causing a lot of trouble in the classroom, until his parents found out at a PTA meeting that Charles wasn’t real and Laurie had made him up to not get in trouble. The story, ”Miss Awful”, by Arthur Cavanaugh, is about a 3rd grade class that had a very nice teacher who had to go to an emergency and they got a substitute. The substitute, Miss Orville, is very strict and the children hate her and plot to kill her plant. Miss Orville just wanted them to learn what they needed to know, and Roger stays after class to show her that he did learn something.The short stories, “Miss Awful” and “Charles” are similar and different in many ways.

One similarity that can be found with the parents. Both parents are concerned and shocked for their child. The author explains, “Such was Roger’s distress that his mother offered to stop at Schrafft’s on Thirteenth Street and treat him to a soda.” Laurie’s concerned mother asks,“Do you think that kindergarten in too unsettling for Laurie?” This shows that they both care about their children. Another similarity is that both took place in an elementary school. “The day my son started kindergarten,” “A small, private institution” A final similarity is that they both have a teacher/child conflict.
