These two powerful men clashed in the Aztec empire, leading to its ultimate demise. Moctezuma was a powerful man, but he wasn’t necessarily a strong leader. He became fearful easily, and when he heard the prophecy that the empire would fall in the year he was ruling, he became obsessed with keeping it from coming true. He seemed to be very insecure about his orders to his people, and when Cortes arrived, he allowed himself to be pushed around, eventually becoming his puppet.
