St. Peter's Basilica is located in present day Vatican City, which would have been the west empire. It was built between 318 and 322, taking 30 years to complete. The basilica stood until the 16th century, when it was rebuilt. It sits on St. Peter's square, which is a forecourt divided in two sections that are surrounded by tall colonnades. The first section is an oval, and the second is shaped like a trapezoid. The basilica has a large façade with giant columns, and it stretches across the end of the square. It has steps where two statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul stand. It has a cruciform shape with an elongated nave in the Latin cross
