In the short stories “The Story of an Hour” by Chopin and the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Gilman, the critical approach seen is the feminist approach. In “The Story of an Hour”, Mrs. Mallard who has a heart condition is told that her husband had died. After a brief Grieving period, she came to the realization that she was free from her marriage and can now pursue what she wants to. At the end of the story, have her husband returns and she dies of what they called “the joy that kills”. This story shows how her role as a woman had been almost oppressed by her husband, not saying he abused her or anything of that nature but the role women in society had been in. In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, the main character is suffering from depression
