Neo faces a difficult choice between two pills, a red pill, and a blue pill. These pills each represent something different, and they both have the potential to provide a reality for an individual. The red pill would open an individual’s eyes to the bitter reality that they are currently in, while the blue pill would help them live in a pleasant illusion of the reality that they are in. Society often chooses to go down the path of choosing the blue pill since they will be living their lives comfortably and will be able to live in ignorance regarding the truths of their reality. Through virtual reality, many can escape their lives and live in a twisted reality. This represents how people will want to ignore the harsh truths of the world and live in a fantasy land where everything is comfortable and they are not being approached with the harsh truth. People are so obsessed with not knowing the truth and seeking information that researchers conducted a study, and “the study showed that the desire to avoid information is widespread, and that most people had at least some domains, be it their health, finances or perception by others.” where they still chose to remain unaware (Maderer 8). One may think that it is younger people who prefer not to be informed on certain topics, even regarding them, but the harsh reality is that many people of all ages and backgrounds prefer to remain unaware of topics pertaining to them. People will do anything to be able to avoid information that may make them uncertain about something or if it can potentially hurt them. Everyone should realize that information, no matter how painful it may be, can always help an individual in the future at the most unexpected
