Canadian-American activist, Michael J. Fox, once said, “I believe purpose is something for which one is responsible; it’s not just divinely assigned.” People often think everyone automatically has a purpose to live, but people don’t and struggle to find the purpose of why they’re living. The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer is a novel that illustrates the journey of Matt, a clone, as he navigates life mistreated and used. The Last Star by Rick Yancey is a novel about a post-apocalyptic world where the remaining humans are trying to remain alive while trying to eliminate the antagonist. The authors use literary elements such as characterization, physical setting, and social setting to develop the theme of one struggling to find a purpose in life, represented in the dystopian novels The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer and The Last Star by Rick Yancey. …show more content…
When Matt first went to the Big House, he was immediately not welcomed after learning he was a clone. Rosa was to take care of Matt, who eventually ordered gardeners to build a barrier filled with sawdust. They went to visit El Patron, the doctor checks him out, “[Matt’s] suffering from mild malnutrition. He has sores in his mouth.
