Every human being’s life is precious. Taking a life is a wicked action that should be dealt with with almost absolute punishment. The exception to that rule is those who deal with psychological disorders. People who deal with extreme versions of mental health conditions are not in the right state of mind, and it causes them to see life from a different perspective. Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart,” Dubus’s “Killings,” and Delaney’s “Clean” are all great examples of people who see from that other perspective. The social issue all three protagonists deal with is the psychological effects of guilt, schizophrenia, and impaired judgment that cause the three men to kill, and the effects killing leaves these men with. According to the United States Department of Transportation “One person every 39 minutes” that is how quickly people lose someone in their life, and that is only taking into account the deaths caused by drunk driving. Aside from drunk driving, there are many other ways that alcohol can impact a person’s life. Alcohol can impact a person’s life through alcohol poisoning, or it can affect someone through decision-making. The experiments run by the National Institute of Health are in the “Coin Flipping Task” and the “Cups Task”. The Coin Flipping Task was a test designed to see the effects of decision-making when both profit and loss were at a fifty percent split. The Cups Task was a ball placed under one of the three cups unless the participant was willing to bet more, and then the ball would be placed in one of five instead and then mixed the cups. Any person with a clear mind would know that risks should not be as equal as the rewards.“Clean” by Edward J. Delaney is a perfect example of someone who is intoxicated making a risky decision.
