El Niño and La Niña are the names for two weather patterns involving the variations in the ocean temperatures. The way El Niño works is when trade winds that usually blow east to west weaken switch directions to head east. this causes warm water to build up off the coast of South America. When it occurs it occurs mostly over the winter time in America. El Niño Creates a south work shift in the jet stream and causes flooding in the south and dry hot weather in the pacific northwest.
