During this time in the novel, Ma and Jack have found safety and have been taken out of the shed. They have been brought to a hospital where they have been interviewed and have been helped with any mental or physical issues that have been created from so many years in the shed. The quote I have chosen reallly touched me, when I had first read it. Jack was walking somewhere with Ma and saw a vending machine. Jack saw the chocolate locked inside of the machine and wished he knew the code to let them free. I believe this was a indication the author has put in to the story to show the empathy that Jack has and how he is able to see in a different perspective of the captivity of him and Ma.
