The main character Cinderella, had a rough time with her two stepdaughters with responses like “Is this stupid creature to sit in the same room with us? Those who eat food must earn it. She is nothing but a kitchen maid!” The author continues on with the harsh scene when “They took away her pretty dresses, and put on her an old gray kirtle, and gave her wooden shoes to wear.” “Just look now at the proud princess, how she is decked out!” Keywords and phrases like “stupid creature”, “she is nothing but a kitchen maid” and “decked out” presents a clear image of bullying towards the readers, thus creating a harsh mood. The author even presents cruel actions by adding the word “took away”. Another scene of harsh conduct starts out with “Cut the toe off for when you are Queen you will never have to go on foot.” As a result of the mother, “The girl cut her toe off, squeezed her foot into the shoe, concealed the pain, and went down to the Prince.” The word cut is a negative word which creates a rigid setting thus representing a harsh mood. In this scene, the girl cuts off her toe because she was forced by her mother. This clearly shows and creates a harsh mood.
