Jeff Lemire and Gord Downie’s “Secret Path” demonstrates an effective exploration of three of the four I’ve explored in class: specifically, Injustice, Insurrection and Inspiration. First of all, there is an example of injustice reinforced when the Indigenous kids first arrive at the Cecelia Jeffery Indian Residential school. Without permission or consent, their long hair is cut away by the faceless priests and nuns. This diminishes their individuality by making them all look the same. The change in Chanie’s hair also clearly distinguishes the present blue suffering from the warmer yellow and orange happiness of Chanie’s family life, illustrated in flashback.
