In July of 1925, the Scopes Monkey trial changed the precedents for science education in Dayton Tennessee, affecting the entire nation. This trial between Clarence Darrow, the defense lawyer, and William Bryan, the prosecution, decided the fate of John Scopes. Scopes, the defendant in the trial, had taught evolution, which was illegal in the time. Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee’s play, Inherit the Wind, is a fictional story based off of this fateful trial. Matthew Harrison Brady, based off of William Bryan, enters the play as a larger-than-life character. He has immense amounts of power, influence, and success. Although Brady uses words to gain power, eventually the language he uses causes him to lose the influence that he once had;
