Many rumors surround him during his parties and outings. These include him murdering a man and even at one point Tom Buchanan suggested that Gatsby was a bootlegger. In addition to these seemingly very unlikely he has revealed some information about his past and more importantly about his wealth. In Chapter 5 , Fitzgerald wrote, “Oh, I've been in several things," he corrected himself. "I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business. But I'm not in either one now." However as the story continues we find that the drug portion of his wealth is still an ongoing factor, contributing to a lie. The idea of lying and deceit is common throughout this story which contributes to it becoming one of the main themes. In a way Gatsby is living his life as a lie. In Chapter six Fitzgerald comments, “So he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen-year-old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end.” He
