In the United States, school and education has a huge role in a person's life. Education gives people the power to chose from a variety of career choices. Kids from five to eighteen attend a private school, a public school, or a home school, this first type of education is called “compulsory education”, this means it is required by law. Compulsory education started in Massachusetts in 1852 when the compulsory education law was passed. This law required every city and town to offer primary school, focusing on grammar and basic arithmetic. College is supposed to help you attain that higher paying job but in reality it can leave you deep in debt right out of college. If the goal is to educate people so that they can get a good job to support themselves and their families, why is college so expensive?
The United States is set up to where the people that go to college will gain a higher paying job and end up with a lower chance of unemployment or poverty. Students are pressured and almost expected to go college after high school to attain a higher paying job but many students end up with more and more money in student debt than they can pay off. Students my feel pressure early on in high school to have good grades, a perfect GPA, and a high ACT score, all of which go into getting into college and earning a scholarship to pay for it. High school students can become overwhelmed or stressed about grades to the point of them developing serious problems. Stress on a student can cause physical pain such as: headaches, stomachaches, weight loss or gain, immune system suppression, reproductive problems, high blood pressure, etc. Stress can also cause emotional problems like, depression, memory problems, substance abuse, etc. Stress can even cause relational symptoms with road rage, overreactions, isolation from social activities, frequent job changes, etc. (What Are the Symptoms of Stress?). Today students can take advanced level classes in high school to bump up their GPA. Sometimes a student could be taking a college level class and not have their GPA bumped as high as just an advanced class (Neighmond). Sometimes advanced classes can be taught by an easier teacher than a college class teacher, leaving the students in the college class more to stress about. The pressure of passing classes in high school to earn college credit causes students to become stressed and sometimes cause them to cheat on assignments to get by. Once students see that cheating resolves their stressed feelings they will form a habit of cheating. If a student forms the habit
