During the 1700s, conflicts between the Muscogee (Creek) Indians and Europeans as well as other tribes were high, leading groups of the Muscogean people in Alabama and Georgia to seek new land on which to live. Some bands of lower Creeks sought territory free from the upper Creek people’s dominance and some sought rich fields for farming. Around the year 1760, these groups migrated to Florida to a place called Chocuchattee (Red House), which became one of the first settlements of the tribe that would later be known as the Seminole.
