In the novel Among The Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix, the theme conformity connects to Luke’s escape from his house. Luke’s overprotective dad said that luke wasn't allowed in the kitchen anymore, and had to eat all his meals sitting on the bottom step, because someone asked his dad if they have air conditioning because they always kept their shades pulled. Luke had no other choice but to obey so unwillingly, “Luke ate every meal after that on the bottom step. It became a habit, but a hated one.” (Haddix 23) Since Luke always listened to everything his parents told him, he hated his home. Before Luke made his escape he called his house a prison.
