Desmond’s decision of being a conscientious objector impacted his life in many different ways. His choice to become a conscientious objector could have gotten him killed during combat and his fellow soldiers did agree with beliefs and did not understand his decision. One example, is he was defenseless on the combat field and his fellow soldier's state that will not help him because he does not carry weapon. This shows his choice is risking his life. This choice resulted in being beating, teased by fellow soldiers in order to get him to quit. He persevered through all this. He was then court marshalled. However, Desmond’s choices showed society, and many people that you can be hero without firing a gun. In addition, he also showed society that there are many ways you can be part of the military. He displayed this when he became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on the battlefield.
