During the seventeenth century absolutism and constitutionalism became the dominant forms of government. These two governments derived their power from two theories that were both supported by many upstanding scholars. The divine right of kings theory held by Absolutists and the social contract theory held by Constitutionalists were deeply impactful in the seventeenth century description of where the origin of the state and its power were derived and the roles of the citizens within those states. A monarch who supported the divine right of kings believed that it was their right to rule the country and that “the state of the monarchy is the supremest thing upon earth” (Doc 1). Due to their belief that only God was above them, monarchs perceived
