Controversy: The Legalization Of Rape Culture

To begin discussing controversy, one must first understand the issue at hand. Rape culture can be described as the normalization of sexualized violence by society (“What is”). Sexual violence is characterized as sexual harassment or assault, and/or rape; the term "sexual" must be defined as relating to the instincts, physiological processes, and activities connected with physical attraction or intimate physical contact (Google dictionary). There are two very distinct opinions concerning the topic of rape culture, focused on determining its presence as a societal problem.
The first side of controversy states that rape culture is real and sexual violence is a serious problem. Evidence of rape culture can be seen in music, television, social media, advertisements, and more. Music artists such as Rick Ross have normalized sexual violation of women through their song lyrics: “Put molly all in her champagne/She ain’t even know it/I took her home and I enjoyed that/She ain’t even know it” (Ross). In a world where one in six people have experienced attempted or completed rape, it can easily be seen that this is a problem (Fahrenthold 26).
