Controversy: The Qualities Of A Hero

“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). What defines a hero and what characteristics are needed for someone to be heroic? Not everyone can be a hero, so what traits single out the heroes from the rest? I believe that a hero is someone who does not only do things for themselves, is brave and overcomes challenges and controversy, and does not expect recognition. First, a hero is someone who is very brave and overcomes challenges and controversy. They do not cower down to powerful enemies. A hero has the courage to stand up to enemies, bullies, etc. For example, Bruce Wayne, a brave hero, stands up to criminals, including Falcone, Scarecrow, and Ra’s al ghul in “Batman Begins.” In the script, it says, “Rachel: And you serve Gotham? Batman: I serve justice,” (Batman Begins by David Goyer). This shows how heroes have the courage to stand up to dangerous criminals, even after the criminals defeat them the first time. A hero’s quest does not lead to stardom or fame at the end, and they do not look for rewards. A good example of this is Deamonte Love. Love, only 6 years old, took care of a group of toddlers after they were trapped in an apartment building. He did this not for recognition, but because the toddlers needed to be taken care of. In “Love Triumphs: 6-Year-Old Becomes a Hero to Band of Toddlers, Rescuers” by Ellen Barry, it says, “How he promised he’d take care of his brother.” This shows how a hero does not want recognition.
