A lens is a transparent device bounded by two curved surfaces. A virtual line, which passes through both bounding surfaces of a lens, is called the optic axis. The center point on the optic axis, which lies in the center of the lens, is called the optic center. A lens has the objective of reflecting light, and accomplishes this by possessing a different index of refraction than the surrounding medium. Generally, lenses are made out of glass and are surrounded by air.
There are two types of lenses: converging, and diverging. A converging lens causes parallel rays to converge and pass through its second focal point. On the other hand, a diverging lens causes parallel rays to diverge as if the rays originated at its second focal point.
