About Copperas Cove http://www.copperascovetx.gov/ The city of Copperas Cove is known as "The City built for Family Living". The friendly community of nearly 30,000 residents is nestled among five hills in Central Texas. Because of the town's placement, the town is alternatively known as the “City of Five Hills.”

The Central Texas town, set within the gateway to the Texas Hill Country, boasts scenic vistas of rolling hills carpeted with wildflowers. Humans have inhabited the land for thousands of years. The fertile soil and ample resources continue to attract a diverse array of residents to the area to this day.

However, the modern history of the community is less than 200 years old. Originally, the community of Copperas Cove was a small farming and ranching community in the 1870s. The name of the pioneering community was derived from the mineral water found in a nearby creek.

In the 1880s, the small town benefited from the expansion of the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway. As a result of the rail-line, by the mid-1890s the population of the small community had risen to 300, and residents had formed their own school district.

In 1942, the creation of nearby Fort Hood also had an invigorating effect on the economy of Copperas Cove. The population of Copperas Cove grew exponentially with the opening of the new base. Many of the new residents were attracted to the job opportunities brought on by the base or were retired military personal who chose to remain in the area.
