"Rainsford, trying to peer through the dank tropical night that was palpable as it pressed its thick warm blackness in upon the yacht.” "The old charts call it
`ShipTrap Island,"'

"Yes, even that toughminded old Swede, who'd go up to the devil himself and ask him for a light” "There was no breeze. The sea was as flat as a plateglass window. We were drawing near the island then.
What I felt was aa mental chill; a sort of sudden dread." “He strained his eyes in the direction from which the reports had come, but it was like trying to see through a blanket.” “Some wounded thingby the evidence, a large animalhad thrashed about in the underbrush; the jungle weeds were crushed down and the moss was lacerated; one patch of weeds was stained crimson. A small, glittering object not far away caught Rainsford's eye and he picked it up. It was an empty cartridge. “

This was a great form imagery. It is great at creating a mood. It shows the setting is very dark and the air is thick. It is so thick that they can touch it It is made clear when the story says “Pressed its thick warm blackness in upon the yacht.”

With this name we know that ships get trapped here. There is probably a great chance that their ship will get trapped their. This is a great example of hyperbole. It shows how scary the island really is. It shows that the island is dangerous and even the toughest sailors don't want to trudge its waters. Even though there was no wind blowing
Whitney still had a bad feeling. The island causes bad things to happen and he can sense it.

This is another strong use of imagery. It shows that the night is still very dark. It tells that you can’t see anything in this dark unforboding light. It tells of something bad happening because bad things tend to happen in the dark.

This quote has very strong imagery. It shows that something has been hunted in the jungle. It shows danger, that there are things being hunted. There was a sense of despair that went along with the slaughtered creature.

“Bleak darkness was blacking out the sea and jungle when
Rainsford sighted the lights.” “About the hall were mounted heads of many animalslions, tigers, elephants, moose, bears; larger or more perfect specimens
Rainsford had never seen.

“For a moment the general did not reply; he was smili ng his curious redlipped smile.
Then he said slowly,
"No. You are wrong, sir. The
Cape buffalo is not the mo st dangerous big game." He sipped his wine. "Here in my preserve on this island," he said in the same slow tone,
"I hunt more dangerous game." "No animal had a chance with me any more. That is no boast; it is a mathematical certainty.
The animal had nothing but his legs and his instinct. Instinct is no match for reason. When I thought of this it was a tragic moment for me, I can tell you." "But they are men," said
Rainsford hotly.
"Precisely," said the general.
"That is why I use them. It gives me pleasure. They can reason, after a fashion.
So they are dangerous." "A rather good lot, I think," observed the general. "They are let out at seven every night.
If anyone should try to get into my houseor out of itsomething extremely regrettable would occur to him." “That's the trouble with these sailors; they have dull brains to begin with, and they do not

This gives rainsford hope. He sees lights, knowing that something is near. This would be very exciting as it would give people
