In Cormac Mc Carthy’s Blood Meridian, The Kid is a character who lives outside of society and whose constant chaotic actions disrupt the world around him, yet his changing motivations and his often belligerent attitude throughout the plot contributes to the overall message of the story. Starting from his upbringing, to a life of violent vagrancy, and finally turning on the world he’s allowed himself to slip into, The Kid lives a life of rebellion towards society and the western world. Born under a passing comet, a bad omen to some, the kids life began with controversy. His first act of rebellion, however, was running away from his stagnant home at 14, becoming a vagabond who constantly picked fights and barely had enough money to scrape by.
