It joined various regional alliances but was largely unaffected by their presence. After Federal Republic of Central America became defunct in 1939 the country declared itself to be a sovereign nation and developed on its own.
The economy of the country was driven by their chief export of coffee to the European markets. For this reason a method of transportation was needed to transport the coffee from the plantations to the docks. An American contractor was given the permit to build railroads and the payment was made in land and train lease. The land owner started cultivating bananas in the given area and it started to rival coffee exports.
The country experienced two civil wars, with the second one being bloodier. A group of armed forces were successful in taking over the government in the year 1948 as a rebellion against the former government. The coup being a success the leaders established a temporary junta government. The standing army of the country was disbanded and a formal constitution was enacted in 1949 and the junta then ceded all its power. However with the advent of the Spanish, many new spices and domesticated animals were introduced to the country as well. With the passage of time the country acquired some Caribbean and African flavours to its original cuisine as well.
The traditional base of Costa Rica is rice and black beans. This is served three times a day. In addition to this there are other exotic vegetables and fruits that are consumed.
CULTURE
The ethnicity of the country is mostly castizos and mestizos. There are small fractions of Chinese, Spanish, Africans, Mulattoes and Native Americans. The religion practised is Christianity and is widespread. Only a small fraction practice Buddhism and an even smaller fraction practice other religions.
The Costa Rica has always been a location where the cultures of the North America and the South have mixed together. This led to a new culture having the best of both cultures. Dances like salsa, merengue etc. are practiced by the citizens and forms a part of their identity.
The country has a national team for football and in the 2014 world cup they reached the quarter finals.
