Counselling theory includes the thoughts and evidence base behind the therapeutic nature of counselling. There are many different and varied schools of thought in relation to counselling and they all provide alternative concepts of how the human mind works in relation to emotion and behaviour. Whilst there are 7 main examples, these have been adapted and blended and other models formed. Two examples of counselling skill are the Humanistic approach – A person centred model and the Behavioural approach – A model based of learning processes in development.
Whilst counselling theory provides the evidence base, counselling skills are the skills used in delivering these theoretic approaches. The two come hand in hand and you cannot use one without
