Often the most powerful monuments stir controversy and a prime example of this is Maya Lin’s Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial, in Washington DC.
This work articulated lost without redemption. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial because of the non-traditional design of a memorial there was much controversy.

The initial idea was to ca create an opening wound in the earth to symbolize the gravity and lost of those lost Soulja's of the Vietnam war. now the finished design is a granite wall and V-shaped with one side pointing to the Lincoln memorial and the other to the Washington monument.

Family and friends of the American military casualty in Vietnam now visit the memorial and personal tokens and mementos are left at the wall daily in their memory

Both Monuments and Counter-monuments still hold a great place in society although most artists now argue that Counter-monuments maybe a more effective. I somehow agree, after reading numerous articles
