Country Music Concert Report

The first concert I attended was a part of the Faulty Concert Series at the Flint School of Performing Arts. The concert featured Dr. Spencer Prewitt on the clarinet and I-Chen Yeh on the piano. The second concert I went to was the Chamber Music Concert put on by The University of Michigan-Flint’s Department of music. The Chamber Music Concert included a trumpet ensemble, a double-bass duo, a flute quartet and quintet, a brass quartet, a string ensemble, and a jazz combo. Both concerts I attended featured pieces from more than one era of music.
Overall I enjoyed both concerts, although there were certain pieces I did not much care for. For instance, I did not enjoy the trumpet ensemble portion of the Chamber Music Concert. Perhaps it was only due to the small venue, but the dynamics of the trumpets was extremely loud and honestly hurt my ears. Also, I felt the pieces were very jarring and in general difficult to listen to. On the other hand, I found Georg Phillip Telemann’s Aria to be pleasant and comforting. The melody also sounded very familiar. Seven Steps to Heaven was very entertaining and I enjoyed the upbeat tempo to end the concert. As for the clarinet concert, the romantic pieces by Schumann were not my favorite. Thinking back, I am hardly able to remember them other than they made me tired. I much rather enjoyed Muczynski’s

I often found myself creating imaginary scenarios that corresponded with the music. In particular, Time Pieces reminded me of an old black and white film featuring a detective in a bowler hat running around New York City frantically trying to piece together clues while probably falling in love with the crime boss’s girl. The different instruments played during the Chamber Music Concert created varying moods through their specific tone colors. For example, the double-bass duo created a more somber atmosphere than the flute
