Throughout “Coyote Stole Fire”, Coyote works alone rather than with a partner unlike the nature of Master Cat and Anansi and Aso. Coyote defeats the powers of Thunder by trickery and cheating rather than through teamwork. He works solo throughout the story even during his close shave with death because “Coyote was not afraid of Thunder” (44) and Coyote alone. The other animals are understandably frightened by his menacing power and his possessiveness over the fire they so long to have. Coyote challenges Thunder to a gamble and “Thunder [is] no match for Coyote when it [comes] to gambling” (45). Here, the readers see that even if Coyote had a partner, that animal would be no match for Coyote’s clever and quick mind, they might even be a nuisance
