Chromium is a metallic element both odorless and tasteless that occurs naturally in the environment. It occurs in two principal forms: trivalent chromium (chromium-3) and hexavalent chromium (chromium-6) (EPA). Chromium-3 is an important part of the human diet in small amounts. All naturally occurring forms of chromium usually occur in the trivalent state combined with iron or other metal oxides. Cr-3 is the most stable form of chromium and is used industrially for leather tanning, preventing corrosion, and electroplating, and as a component of stainless steel. Chromium-6 occurs when the industrial forms of Cr-3 erode and interact with the natural environment (Barnhart, 1997; Blowes, 2002). It is the second most common groundwater contaminant
