There are many skills in this world, and many people aim to be good at certain ones. These skills can be simple and easy, while others can be complex and hard. Despite what skill someone is trying to be great at, all skills must be mastered through hard work and deliberate practice. In Colvin's article, “What it Takes to be Great,” Colvin lists the parts in deliberate practice and explains how all skills can be improved with this. Even random skills, like carving a cat on a pumpkin, can be mastered through deliberate practice. Using the right tools makes it easier to carve the pumpkin than using the wrong tools. Picking a pumpkin actually requires high levels of repetition and contains receiving feedback. Colvin’s article, “What it Takes to be Great”, states that “the best people in any field are those who devote the most hours to what the researchers call deliberate practice. It's activity that's explicitly intended to improve performance.” The more hours devoted to trying to improve this skill will make one better at it. In this tip, by studying pumpkins and how they should look, an idea is expected for the perfect pumpkin. When picking a pumpkin, it takes many tries to find the perfect one. It contains high levels of repetition, since the factors of a perfect pumpkin is looked for multiple times.
