I have visited Crater Lake National Park several times as it is relatively close to where I live. It is in south central Oregon. We have visited in the summer months and the early spring months. The water is smooth in the mornings like a sheet of glass if there is no wind. You can see fish swimming below you in the intense blue water. This lake has the clearest water in any lake in the United States The surrounding mountains and trees are beautiful in the background and are reflected in the water. The air is fresh, and you can smell the pine forests that surround the area. It is located between Mount Hood in Oregon and Mt. Shasta in northern California. It is a remnant of a destroyed volcano. The volcanic depression called a caldera that formed by the collapse of a 12,000-foot volcano known as Mount Mazama during a massive eruption approximately 7,700 years ago. The broken-up rock above the magma chamber collapsed and formed a huge crater over six miles across. Hundreds of years of snow and rain filled the caldera, creating Crater Lake. The information center and rangers can tell you about the history, geology and it was interesting to learn how the caldera that forms the lake was created. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States at 1949 feet deep. The lake was formed when the volcano collapsed inside itself. There aren't any streams or rivers flowing into the lake. The lake water comes from snow which has melted from the inner surface of the walls of the collapsed volcano. Glaciers and volcanoes that occurred at Crater Lake during the known global ice ages that helped in shaping the caldera. You can drive around the lake, and there are many access points onto the rim road which circles the entire
